Homeschool Daddies
What's
a Daddy to do? Many spouses would like to be more involved with homeschooling, but don't know exactly what to do! Maybe you're
a teacher-mom and aren't sure how your husband fits into the equation, especially if he's away from home for long hours each
day. There are ways for even the busiest Daddy to make a meaningful contribution.
(1) He can make it his responsibility
to assure that your home school complies with state law.
(2) He can go to your state
convention and homeschool meetings whenever possible.
(3) He can learn to have
reasonable expectations of the teacher/mom/wife. Your house will not always be clean, and your meals may often be frozen,
but your wife is doing great work with your children.
(4) He can take time to listen
to his wife, without criticism or comment. She may need to vent her frustrations.
(5) He can give his wife
time alone, perhaps to go to the library to do lesson plans, or to catch a wind of inspiration.
(6) He can bring dinner home,
or agree to cook on regular nights.
(7) He can play with the
kids! Go outside, play a board game. There's always time to have a bit of fun!
(8) He can offer to teach
a subject. Math, science and physical education are popular choices for fathers. Then be consistent about teaching.
(9) He can read aloud. This
simple act can have a profound effect on your child's educational experience.
(10) He can help with bedtime
routines and baths.
(11) He can be available
to modify study space as your needs require. This might require moving furniture or building additional shelves.
(12) He can stay in touch
and help answer questions while at the office.
Even a simple contribution
can speak volumes to a tired homeschool Momma. What's a Daddy to do? There's plenty!
